Are you ready for some Christmas magic? Why wait until December 24 when you can start in early December? Drop Me Anywhere Tours for Women kicks off the season with two Magical Christmas Markets Tours in Germany and Austria.
During our 10-days together, we’ll hit up at least 12 Christmas markets, each with its own style. From big city celebrations to small town traditions, we’ll enjoy the magic along with the locals. Depending on which of our two tours you choose, you’ll begin in either Stuttgart, Germany or Salzburg, Austria and sparkle your way through the wonderful food, local crafts, music, and glühwein (I’ll explain when we meet). Check out the itinerary below, hit me up with any questions, and start dreaming about a magical holiday season.

Day 1 – Home to Salzburg
Today you’ll depart your home and fly overnight (if traveling from North America) to Salzburg, Austria.
Day 2 – Arrive in Salzburg, Austria
After a wonderful night’s sleep in your oh, so comfortable airplane seat, you’ll awaken and say “guten Morgen” to Austria. After landing in Salzburg, you’ll make your way to our hotel, the unique Guest House of the Seminary of the Trinity Church, located within walking distance of all good things. It’s an easy 1/2-hour bus ride, or 15-minute taxi ride, to the hotel. If enough of our tour friends arrive at similar times, I’ll be able to come meet you and we can ride the bus together. Not to worry, we’ll talk before you arrive.
Once you’ve settled in your room and had a chance to refresh with a shower and grab a bite to eat, we’ll get acquainted with Salzburg on a 2-hour walking tour. This evening, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant nearby. (Our goal is to stay awake until 10pm as to quickly adapt to the new time zone.)
Hotel: Gästehaus Priesterseminar Salzburg
Included Meals: D
Day 3 – Salzburg, Austria
After a good night’s sleep and some breakfast, we’ll be feeling much more energetic today when we board the bus for a 4-hour Sound of Music Tour. During our search for Captain von Trapp (because, oh, Christopher Plummer in that film), we’ll visit the Pegasus Fountain in Mirabell Gardens where Maria and the kids danced, the gazebo that Maria and the Captain first kissed, and where Liesl and Rolf sang, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” the convent, and the church where Maria and the Captain were married, and many other locations. It’s also a great way to see the surrounding area. We’ll arrive back in the city center where we can grab a bite to eat and head over to the DomQuartier Museums. These four-museums-in-one offer spectacular art, history, and architecture. We’ll walk through 1,300 years of history in this former residence of the prince-archbishops, see the spectacular cathedral, and stroll through the Cabinet of Curiosities (yes, it’s as strange as it sounds). Tonight, we walk across the Danube into the Old City for our first of many magical Christmas markets.
Hotel: Gästehaus Priesterseminar Salzburg

Day 4 – Salzburg, Austria to Großarl, Austria
Before departing Salzburg, we’ll spend an hour visiting Mozart’s Birthplace. This former apartment, now museum, is where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his family lived for decades and where he developed his musical skills. In the rooms where he lived, we’ll see some of his correspondence, musical instruments, and family portraits, while learning about his fascinating life.
By late morning, we’ll walk 10-minutes back to our hotel to collect our bags and head up into the mountains where we’ll arrive in our very-special, family-owned hotel in Großarl (pronounce Grossarl). Don’t let the term “family owned” fool you into thinking it’s not a proper hotel. This place is one of my favorites in all my travels and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with it too. Once you’re settled in your room (oh, the view!), you might want to take the local bus into town (it only takes 15 minutes) to look around and maybe have a coffee, lunch, or do some shopping at the wonderful local art shops. Or maybe you’ll want to have a bite or a drink (or both) at the hotel and bask in their three saunas.
Tonight, we’ll head into town to enjoy Großarl’s traditional Advent market. Walking through their market is as if you’re walking in a Currier and Ives Christmas card. In fact, the feature photo on this tour listing is one I took at this market. We can grab a bite to eat, drink glühwein, shop for local handcrafts, and walk the Nativity Path up to the church where we’ll see a variety of Nativity scenes created by the local “Crib Club” throughout the years. This is truly magical and I can’t wait for you to join me this year.
Hotel: Dorfer Hotel and Chalet
Included Meals: B
Day 5 – Großarl, Austria
“Just hear those sleigh bells jingling….Come on it’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.” Yup, today we’ll head out for a sleigh ride in the winter wonderland of Hüttschlag. Just a-half-hour from Großarl, Hüttschlag lies within Hohe Tauern National Park, the biggest national park in the Alps. Here, we’ll climb aboard our horse-drawn sleigh for an unforgettable ride through the valley, surrounded by the Alps. Afterwards, we can stop for tea in the village and visit their Christmas market (much smaller and more traditional than most we’ve visited) before returning to our hotel to warm-up. Tonight, we’ll enjoy a gourmet dinner, perhaps followed by a sauna.
Hotel: Dorfer Hotel and Chalet
Included Meals: B, D
Day 6 – Großarl, Austria to Innsbruck, Austria
After our delicious breakfast, we’ll head back down the mountain to catch out train to Innsbruck. Our just-over-3-hour journey brings us to the stunning capital of Tyrol. Where we walk through the old city to arrive at our hotel on the banks of the River Inn. Once settled, and after you’ve grabbed a bite of food on your own, we’ll meet our guide for a walking tour along the cobblestone streets where we’ll learn about the famous Golden Roof, the oh-so-interesting Emperor Maximillian, stroll down Maria-Theresien-Straße, and admire the stunning architecture. After that, we’ll head out on an adventure. Put on your walking shoes as we’ll walk to 6 Christmas markets across the city with a goal of enjoying a glühwein (or a kinderpunsch) at each one.
Hotel: Das Innsbruck Hotel
Included Meals: B
Day 7 – Innsbruck, Austria
This morning we’ll head over to the Hofburg Imperial Palace to see how royalty really lived. The palace, completed in 1500, was home to various royals over the centuries including Emperor Maximilian, Maria Theresa, Archduke Karl Ludwig, the beloved Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), and Emperor Franz Joseph. From here, we’ll walk 5-minutes down the road to visit the Court Church where we’ll see the 28 life-size bronze statues watching over the tomb of Maximilian I. Apparently, they didn’t watch particularly well, as Max isn’t actually in the tomb (come join us to find out why). You’ll have the rest of the day to explore independently. You can take the Hop-on/Hop-off Siteseer Bus for free using your included Innsbruck card. Perhaps you’ll get your sparkle on at Swarovski Crystal World, continue with more royalty at Ambras Castle, or check out the Olympic ski jump (all included). It also provides free public transportation across the city and free or discounted admission at many other sites. Tonight, we’ll enjoy an included dinner at a local restaurant.
Hotel: Das Innsbruck Hotel
Included Meals: B, D
Day 8 – Innsbruck, Austria
This morning, let’s take a cable car for a different view of Innsbruck; from the top. Known for its incredible skiing—Innsbruck has hosted 2 Winter Olympics (3, if you count the Youth Olympic Games), so let’s see what it looks like from up there. You’ll enjoy the rest of the day exploring on your own. Maybe you’ll enjoy a sauna and a swim (indoor pool) at the hotel later or one last visit to the sparkling Christmas markets of Innsbruck.
Hotel: Das Innsbruck Hotel
Included Meals: B
Day 9 – Innsbruck, Austria to Esslingen, Germany
This morning we’ll take the train (approx. 4 ½-hours) to Esslingen, Germany. Why Esslingen and not 30-minutes away in Stuttgart? Because Stuttgart, as metropolitan as it is, isn’t the most beautiful or interesting of cities (sshh, don’t tell the locals I said this). But the medieval city of Esslingen, with its monuments, churches, and medieval half-timbered buildings, is a gorgeous, small city to walk through and stay in.
After we’ve settled into our hotel, we’ll join our local guide for a leisurely walk along Esslingen’s cobblestone streets where we’ll get to know the history and see the squares and the most beautiful nooks and crannies of the former Free Imperial City. This evening, we’ll walk over to the Medieval Christmas Market, one of the best Christmas markets I’ve been to. This combination of Renaissance fair and Christmas market harkens back to what the city might have offered in past centuries. We’ll also visit the square next door and enjoy the traditional Christmas Market. You’ll have your choice of traditional Christmas Market food throughout the squares. When you get tired, there’s no worries as our hotel is within walking distance.
Hotel: Hotel am Schillerpark
Meals: B
Day 10 – Esslingen, Germany
Quick quiz (what? I didn’t know there’d be a test!); who invented the automobile? Nope, it wasn’t Henry Ford (he invented the production line). It was Karl Benz. After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll head over to the Mercedes Museum where we’ll learn more about Herr Benz and his life, which brings us through the history of the automobile as it relates to the world through these times. Well head into Stuttgart for a bit of free time for you to wander the city and then meet back up to enjoy a final evening of food, shopping, and glühwein at the Stuttgart Christmas Market.
Hotel: Hotel am Schillerpark
Included Meals: B
Day 11
Today we say auf Wiedersehen as you head off to either the Stuttgart Airport or, perhaps, catch a train back to Salszburg if you’ve booked a roundtrip from home. (It’s about a 5-hour journey but you’ll probably need to stay an extra night in Salzburg to do this.)
Included Meals: B
